Health Access Crisis in South Carolina

Keisha H.•4 months ago South Carolina ranks near the bottom nationally on key health drivers: • Poverty: 13.8% (#41) • Food insecurity: 14.4% (#44) • Education: #43 • Opportunity: #42 41 of 46 counties are designated Health Professional Shortage Areas. SC also runs a fragmented healthcare system across multiple state agencies with limited coordination. In a state where most communities lack access to care, this is not a success story. It’s a policy failure.

SC’s road conditions aren’t just inconvenient—they’re economic strain

Keisha H.•3 months ago Bad roads = more vehicle repairs, higher maintenance costs, and unreliable transportation. In a travel-dependent state, that affects: • getting to work • accessing food • making medical appointments That’s social determinants of health —transportation costs + access to resources barriers. Infrastructure isn’t separate from health care or economic stability. Fix the roads out of the legislative budget, not as another tax on residents → reduce the burden. https://www.consumeraffairs.com/automotive/us-road-conditions.html

SC: 41 of 46 counties are Health Professional Shortage Areas

Keisha H.•3 months ago This is not health care—it’s structural NEGLECT. This drives social determinants of health: • lost income from untreated illness • poor school outcomes for kids • rural decline - become medically underserved and economically stagnant • worse physical and mental health Fix it by: • grow workforce (loan repayment, incentives) • expand NP/PA authority • invest in community care + telehealth • cut insurance barriers Fix the structure → improve access. https://ciceroinstitute.org/research/south-carolina-physician-shortage-facts/
