The SAVE act is an assault on Democracy

From "Welcome to The South Carolina Forum!"

Requiring anyone to spend $160 to vote is a return to the racist days of a pole tax. Any of my representatives that vote for this will make me cross the aisle. Denying any married woman's right to vote because she took her husband's name is not only anti American, they are anti Christian. I will cross aisles to vote against any of my representatives that votes for this. Take notice Timmons and Graham. I will spend every penny I have to defeat you. Choose voters over Fascism. Represent the people of SC rather than the billionaires in Washington,

Somehow people can get and provide ID in India, a country with people in extreme poverty, to vote, but not here. I9 forms (required for employment) have a whole list of documents to prove citizenship and eligibility to work in this country. But somehow when it comes to vote, democrats say women are too inept to get these documents and blacks are too poor.

The SAVE act needs to be read before you voice an opinion. The creator of this subject has not read the bill. But is willing to propagate lies they have been told. Knowledge is power. Ignorance is dangerous.

Providing proof of US citizenship for registration and photo ID at polling place crucial and worth the hassle.

Not everyone has a driver's license nor needs to get one. There should be NO cost to get registered to vote. Poll taxes are illegal and unconstitutional. We voted using our vote ID cards for the past 40 years (in my case) so why passing this restrictive disingenous law now to address a non-issue.

@Sarah M. You are SO correct. From the comments, it seems all have not read the SAVE Act as proposed. It goes way beyond simple photo ID. Bad law. IF you move and have to reregister to vote, you will need your proof of citizenship and proof of legal name changes. The Act specifies what ID’s are allowed for proof— passport, Real ID with citizenship, military ID, a few others. IF your name is somehow deleted from the voter roles in error, as has happened elsewhere with purges, reregistration would be needed. And the federal gov will be monitoring voter roles, which will have to be routinely purged with no notice to the voter. I think there are a few other gems which escape me at this moment.
All you’re doing is parroting false quotes about the save act. No one will be forced to get a passport. South Carolina will come up with using the real ID to verify your citizenship possibly by the color of the star that’s on our license.

Real ID is already established LAW! You need ID to enter into contracts and almost every other important activity! There is NO excuse for not requiring a photo identification to vote!

Who is charging $160 to vote? I guess I'm not understanding. In reference to the comment about the real ID.. yes . Mine cost $20 but it was time for me to renew. I have never heard of anything like this about costing money to vote. I think everyone should have to show ID to vote. I definitely don't understand why people have a problem with it. Unless you are trying to do something you shouldn't be doing. I have always been asked for ID to vote. No matter what state I lived in at the time. Why do these people complain about everything. You all have these expectations of everyone, but you don't want them putting expectations on you.. why not?

@Melanie L. They are claiming the "$160" is to obtain a passport I believe. Which isn't even needed.

I am a native South Carolinian and disagree wholeheartedly. I received my "Real ID" at no cost except the drivers licenses renewal fee that was due anyway. There is a minimal charge for ID only in S.C. that is very affordable and Real ID is available there as well. A birth certificate or proof of citizenship for those that have legally migrated here, and social security card are what is required. Fair, cheap and simple.

If we need ID to fly drive or bank there is no reason to vote without ID
