South Carolina State Income Tax

From "Welcome to The South Carolina Forum!"

Go to the project

I believe SC takes in a good amount of taxes (payroll, property, sales, grocery items, restaurants, etc. ) Necessities such as groceries, clothing should not be taxed. As a senior citizen, I believe once we turn 65, property taxes on primary residences should be halved. Finally, I do not understand our bad roads. It seems to me there is more than enough taxes to keep our roads in good shape. Florida and Texas have done away with their state income tax. If SC did likewise, it would give our state a boost in terms of people relocating here.

We have bad roads because people here want to complain about taxes while also complaining that they are not used for their specific issue and the legislators here have played the public so well by focusing on wedge issues and not producing results. I am all for taking care of elderly citizens, but they should still do their part. Their generation has left future generations a disaster and now they don't understand that the bills are due and they have to do their part. Maybe if they had been more involved in the first place we wouldn't be here.

Doing away with SC Income Tax would shift more taxation on consumption! Since the portion of income spent on consumption is much higher for low income families, it would result in a higher taxation on the poor. Therefore, keep the Income tax and balance it with sales tax in keeping with “each according to their means”.

Anderson county could have fixed our roads but they spent 5.1 million to revitalize Caters Lake and surrounding area! And they wanted to raise our taxes!😭

States like Florida raise revenue through assessments/fees other than income tax, and have considerable tourist revenue. Other states have eliminated property taxes only to realize they could no longer fund public resources, like libraries. With the federal government shifting its responsibility for programs to the states, we need to tread carefully with tax cuts. Our state should first be sure we are serving our own population before making the state more appealing to those who want to relocate here. South Carolina has other good features besides taxes. However, I do support eliminating the tax on groceries.

Yes SC takes in enough taxes. I pay $3.65 every month just for the privilege of using a cellphone. Our problem is not enough money our problem is the way our Structure is set-up. We took away the power from that Governor because of the Royal Governor's provided to us before the American Revolutionary War. No one is held accountable in our State for not fixing our roads. The State Congress can't or won't do anything about anything. But then it's hard to get that many people agree on anything. That's one reason the people of our State believes everything is rigged against them. And in some ways it is. Until we fix our State structure so the governor has the power to fire and hold people accountable nothing will change.

Yes other states have taken care of thei roads. SC should take care of our infrastructure so we can keep up with our increase of people choosing SC as their home.
