Cost of Living and Poverty

I believe economic development can be a force of good. But sometimes, with unrestrained growth comes massive inequality. As of now, South Carolina is the 10th most impoverished state in the nation. 42% of households cannot afford basic necessities. This is a disgrace. The primary driver behind the growing cost of living and reduced wages in SC is simply the existence of large chains that drain the economy of activity. SMEs constantly struggle and are sometimes absorbed by large chains from other states, making SC incredibly hostile for small businesses.

I agree that SC is hostile for small businesses. I want to fight against rising costs due to corporate greed, but there are very few places where I can purchase similar items that don’t still come from a large conglomerate. We need smaller stores like mercantile and housewares shops to be able to challenge the big brands. The issue is that these stores have higher prices, which most people can’t afford these days, esp now with gas prices on the rise.
