Mental illness (MI) always ranks among SC’s top public health needs. About 902K adults live with MI and 216K with Serious MI. The state invests heavily in clinical care through the public mental health system, yet treatment alone does not produce recovery. The 2023 DOJ investigation underscores the need for stronger pathways to independence and reintegration. Scalable models like an Accredited Clubhouse delivers high ROI—reducing costly hospitalizations and demand on clinical care, while improving housing, employment, and long-term recovery outcomes.
